Marble is a porous and softer stone than other natural stones like granite etc. Marble countertops are very porous and require re sealing once every few months.

Travertine is a different stone from marble and it has its own unique properties and metrics. But while granite is one of the least porous natural stones that is not the case with marble. You can seal it to prevent stains but it will absorb liquids rather quickly in its natural form. This makes it more susceptible to staining and etching.

Both stones are porous but travertine is more porous than marble and can be used without being sealed in outside areas where you don t want to slip around from standing water on the stone. However when sanded down and sealed travertine tiles are smooth and suitable for flooring or as shower tiles. However the finish choices and proper care and maintenance make marble look like as it is installed today even after several years. When travertine receives large amounts of heat and pressure it becomes marble a harder form of calcium based stone.

They can absorb moisture in the shower area which can stain or discolor them and in some extreme cases may pit them. This stone is relatively soft and absorbent so it requires a few coats of sealant to prevent debris from penetrating the stone. These holes are filled when the travertine is collected and formed into usable tiles so not to create an overly porous substance that would be a nightmare to. Travertine is a porous stone which is a major drawback depending on where you plan to install it.

The solid portion of the stone is considered vitreous and can be impervious in spots but can range up to 2 5 absorption and be acceptable for the industry standards. However both stones can be sealed to keep them from being stained by liquids like wine or soy sauce or even bathroom cleaning products if used in the kitchen or bathroom.
