Installing Tile Over Vinyl Tile

A unique and time saving way to apply ceramic tile directly on top of vinyl flooring.

Ron and armen tavy demonstrate one such surface in this project as they install ceramic tile over vinyl flooring. Vinyl is typically laid over a solid subfloor which is ideally sturdy enough to keep from sagging under weight should lay straight all the way across when measured with a leveler and shouldn t creak or sag in spots when you walk across it. If the grout lines in the ceramic tile are deep you ll see and feel them under sheet flooring and if you choose to install preglued vinyl tiles they won t stick. The other which is referred to as peel and stick.

Using the tavy thin skin system home owners are now able to lay ceramic tile over surfaces that would have never before been possible. To install ceramic tile over wood the wood surface must be structurally sound enough to support the weight of the tile. So where feasible it makes sense to install the new flooring directly over the old without removing the old flooring. This isn t possible with every flooring material but it s often possible to install ceramic porcelain or stone tile over resilient flooring including standard sheet vinyl vinyl tile or linoleum.

The main caveat is that all vinyl formats call for a smooth subfloor including sheet vinyl vinyl tile and luxury vinyl planks and tiles.
